IP65 vs IP68 LED Modules for Illuminated Furniture
How to select enclosure protection for rechargeable LED lights in glowing furniture, event products and translucent PE applications.
An IP rating helps buyers compare the enclosure protection of a tested LED module. It does not, by itself, prove that the completed table, bar, planter or ice bucket has the same protection. The correct choice depends on water exposure, charging method, installation design and how the finished product will be cleaned, charged and stored.
Choose an IP65 LED module for furniture that may encounter dust, rain, splashes or routine surface cleaning but is not intended for immersion. Consider an IP68 module when the application needs a more completely sealed light unit and the selected model has been tested for the intended immersion conditions.
Understanding the code
What does an IP rating describe?
IEC 60529 classifies degrees of protection provided by enclosures. In an IP code, the first digit relates to protection against solid objects and dust, while the second digit relates to protection against water.
For both IP65 and IP68, the first digit is 6, indicating a dust-tight enclosure. The second digit differs: IP65 covers protection against water jets under defined test conditions, while IP68 covers continuous immersion under conditions specified for the product. An IP68 label does not mean unlimited depth, unlimited time or resistance to every liquid, temperature or cleaning chemical.
Rain and splash exposure
When is IP65 suitable for illuminated furniture?
An IP65 rechargeable LED light can be a practical choice for rotomoulded furniture used in hospitality, events and outdoor areas where the module may face rain, splashing or normal cleaning. Typical examples include glowing bars and tables that are moved indoors after use, illuminated event furniture, acrylic displays and translucent PE products with a protected module opening.
Vcan direct-charge models commonly use an IP65 design. Standard 60 mm, 85 mm, 117 mm and 120 mm direct-charge models are normally available from stock; 175 mm and 200 mm direct-charge models are made to order. The charging socket must remain accessible while being protected from water, dirt, pulling and repeated handling.
IP65 does not mean that the product can be left underwater. It also does not remove the need for a suitable gasket, correct screw pressure and a well-designed opening in the furniture shell.
More demanding water exposure
When should a buyer consider IP68?
An IP68 LED light module may suit applications where a sealed module is a priority. Examples can include frequently washed illuminated furniture, products used close to pools, ice buckets exposed to meltwater, outdoor planters and OEM translucent PE products where an exposed charging connector is undesirable.
Vcan induction-charge module options are made to order and use a sealed, contact-free charging design. The module must be paired with the correct induction base. Charging performance depends on alignment, distance, shell thickness and receiver position, so the complete system should be tested in the actual furniture before mass production.
The exact immersion conditions supported by an IP68 model must be confirmed from its current specification or test documentation. The rating should never be extended to the complete furniture without separate evaluation of the finished assembly.
The finished product
Why the furniture may not match the module rating.
A waterproof RGB LED kit is only one part of the installation. Water can enter around the module even when the light enclosure itself is correctly rated. Important installation details include:
- the diameter and shape of the furniture opening;
- gasket material, condition and compression;
- screw-hole position and even tightening pressure;
- flange contact with the PE or acrylic surface;
- mounting orientation and drainage;
- protection of a direct-charge socket and cable;
- cracks, deformation or uneven thickness in the furniture shell.
For a replacement LED unit used by an event furniture rental company, inspect the old opening and gasket instead of changing only the light. A damaged or hardened gasket can cause leakage even when the new module has the correct rating.

Direct charge or induction charge?
Direct-charge LED modules
Direct charging uses a physical cable or connector. It is generally simple for staff to understand, and the charger and socket are easy to inspect. This can work well for indoor venues, event rental inventory and illuminated furniture stored and charged in a dry area.
The connector needs protection from moisture and strain. Wet products should not be connected to power until the relevant surfaces and charging point are dry.
Induction-charge LED modules
Induction charging removes the exposed charging contact from the module. This supports a sealed design, but the correct base is essential. The charging distance and alignment must work through the actual PE or acrylic structure. For OEM LED kits for translucent PE products, sample testing is recommended before tooling or mass production is finalized.

Choosing waterproof protection for LED furniture.
Is IP68 always better than IP65 for LED furniture?
No. IP68 provides a different level of enclosure protection, but an IP65 direct-charge module may be more suitable when charging access, cost, stock availability and easy service matter more than immersion protection.
Can an IP65 LED module be used outdoors?
It may be suitable for outdoor illuminated furniture when the selected model, installation and use conditions match its rating. Outdoor use still requires correct sealing, drainage, charging-port protection and suitable storage.
Does an IP68 module make a glowing table waterproof?
No. The module rating applies to the tested enclosure. The table opening, gasket, screws, shell and installation must also prevent water entry.
Can I replace an IP65 direct-charge unit with an IP68 induction-charge unit?
Only after checking the complete system. The opening, installation depth, flange, screw holes, induction base, charging distance and remote-control protocol must all be compatible.
What should I order for an uncertain replacement?
When compatibility is unclear, order a matched LED module, approved charger or induction base, remote control and required installation parts. Photos and measurements should be reviewed before ordering.
